Gilera Runner 209 ccm Quattro valve

I drove against a 244 ccm VXR at Lausitz ring and there was a semi tuned GTS 300 allso.
I drove away from both, but with higher RPM.

The potential is bigger and if you can finetune carb, ignition and rollers. 30 HP should be possible with the 278. The Malossi crank is fine made. But mine wasn't as good centered as the stock and that gave a powerloss.

P.S. Current output with Polini vario and ignition setup "by eye" is 23.23 HP

And that is a gain of 7.3 HP compared to a 182 ccm VXR with only a scorpion exhaust.
So compared to that. an additional 7 HP must be possible with a full 70 ccm extra

Was this intended for me? Malossi crank is full circle while the stock isn't. Does that leave a significant effect? I'm quite new with this bike so I have some questions. Different roller weights/torque spring/clutch springs will give what effect? I've been playing around with the rollers and springs, and I have my own theory. But just to make sure my theory is right.

Hi Velo.

I'm planning on doing a 4-stroke project next year.
My plan is to modify a Piaggio zip 125 scooter.

I will place a waterpump from a runner, and then place a 278ccm kubler kit. I will also mount the Multivar vario, a 34mm malossi carb and valves, valve springs, delta clutch, and a nice pipe.

I have a few questions:
Does the malossi cam fit in the QUASAR cilinder heads?
The zip has small 10 inch wheels. I need a good set of gears, so that I will boost the top speed, because otherwise the top speed will be around 110kph. Do you know what the ratio's are for the polini and malossi gears?
Also: how much fuel does your bike use? The Zip SP that I want to build has to be a transport vehicle two at some times, so if fuel consumption is somewhere above 10km/l i will be satisfied.
Also, I am looking for an exhaust pipe, and I like the leovince's by design. A chrome pipe does not look so well under a zip. Which pipe should I choose?

Thanks for your answers.

hi velo..ı am having problems with dellorto on jetting and had a power loss..ı want to ask you what was ur jet size before u add the eprom to the engine? besides , is kübler kit better in acceleration or malossi 209?(in 400metres)

Hi DMa
Try with some different jets ranging from 125 - 140. It uses 6 mm dell'orto jets.
CC = power, power = acceration

Robbinm:
Sounds interesting, though I can't realy help you since I have none what so ever expirience with the parts you mention. But try and ask your dealer for info.
Conserning fuel. Mine does a 15 km/l at race pace. My Leonardo (176 ccm) with the same carb. drives around 20 km/l with speeds of 135 - 150 km/h (when tugged in avoiding the wind )

Att: Stitch. The results with different rollers and springs are the same on the Leader engine as on the normal smaller scooter engines.

if ı put the 278 ccm cylinder on my bike and let the other parts be malossi it it ok? or do ı need to change crank or camshaft or something else ? and besides how can ı order it to cyprus

Your engine doesn't care who the parts come from. As long as it all fits together.

My advise is that you schould try and contact a dealer and ask for their advise.

hpi

hi velo i'm from greece and i have a gilera runner 209cc with malossi cylinder piston, cam, variator, dellorto 34,secondary gears 16/42,maxi delta clutch,x kevlar belt and leovince 4road exhaust...i want to tell me more about the products of hpi you put on your scooter because i want also to put them on my scooter...can you tell me the codes of that products and if you have the malossi digitronic on your scooter with that products...sorry if you don't understand i don't speak very good english...thanks

Velo i just read through your project & i think your head needs a bit more work specifically the ports, there's more room for improvement there, the cylinder head porting is what makes or breaks the 4T engine, you can punch your displacement up to 300cc, put bigger valves & more aggressive cams in there but if the cylinder head cannot flow the required volume of air & exhaust it will be all for nothing.

i have ported countless 4V & 2V heads for various motorcycles including sport bikes, scooters & mopeds & they work very well without using a very long duration, high lift camshaft.

i have built a 125cc 2V engine that made 18hp for the Kawasaki racing team a couple of years ago & that thing can rev to 12000rpm & go 140+kmh so making 30hp from your kind of setup should be pretty easy to do.

velo ı tried the top speed of my bike today with 8.5 gr rollers and it hit 164 kmh..ı hope 170 with higher roller ratios ..but ı need to improve my 0-100...something is still bad with the dellorto and ı cant make a good start because of it ..when ı open the gas to the end the machine cant work properly at the start then goes well..

Try a 3 - 5 number larger mainjet

Mr greek!
Unless you intend on using it solely for racing. Forget every thing about internal rotor.
Get the Malossi digitronic

Hi Tiba.

Thanks for the info, I am very much aware of the possibilites in the head. I have been studying some different heads since I did this. Damn, it is allmost 4 years since I did it now. And I have thought of re doing the head, but the time man. Thats what I fear and don't want. I am too layse :-D

Hi Velo.

I have changed my plans. I have been talking to people a lot and trying out some bikes. I want a scooter for work/home use, so driving through traffic will be it's general purpose.
I have a piaggio zip SP with a 70ccm racing setup (MHR speed grade), so i like throwing my scooter around a lot. The plan for a 4-stroke set-up was mainly because I would like to ride a scooter that gets to high speeds and still handles very well. I thought the ideal scooter for this would be a Zip SP because it handles so well. Unfortunately, there are a few catches. The Zip 125 is not made anymore. I am stuck with second hand scooters, and to get one, I would probably have to travel to germany. Then, I still don't know in what shape it is, and if it is in bad shape, I have to return home without a scooter, that's a waste of time.
Also, the zip has only 10" wheels, so with side wind you will probably be blown away.
Last week, I have built a 2t Zip 180 with a malossi cilinder and a Sito exhaust. This setup is a little slower than my race zip, but it runs quiet and more smooth, because it doesn't have inner rotor ignition. I tested the zip at high speeds, it was still stable because of the RS24 shock absorbers, but I felt not as comfortable as I'd like it to be. Also, the stear was shocking heavily when the engine runs idle, the big piston makes the whole scooter vibrate a lot.
I have also test driven a Vespa GTS 125, which runs really smooth and quiet. Really comfortable, but the wheelbase is long and the scooter wheighs 150KG, too much too be a light scooter. The next day there was a GTS 250 at my scooter dealer, and as a returning customer and good friend of the staff they always allow me to make a short test run. The 250 was much faster, and also at lower RPM's, so it's a comfortable ride. Unfortunately the sides of the scooter hit the ground all the time when taking corners. The Vespa is definately nothing for me, as I like corners.
A friend of mine has a Runner VXR200, and I have ridden it a long time ago. I even forgot, but remembered it again when seeing your topic. I remember that it was fast, but I hadn't done any corners with it.

Inspired by your project, I am now looking for a runner set-up. The runner is a lot more fit for traffic use than a zip at higher speeds. Unfortunately not that many people place their motor runner projects online, so it is hard to see what kind of parts people use.

The big plus for the runner, is that is can still be bought brand new. Everything that I build must be new-looking. I never drive in the rain. Taking a second hand zip this meant that I would need to completely rebuild it.

What would you use as a street front fork? Malossi says the F32S is a good fork for street use, but I have read no reviews of it.
What kind of shock absorbers would you advise me for the rear part? You have nice custom made Bitubo's, I'll guess they're pretty good at the track. Is something like that possible for a street setting and how much will I have to pay for something like that?

As far as for the engine: I have read that the MHR 34 carb by dellortho will not fit because of the helmet compartiment. Just as with my 70cc zip. Only, this runner will be a transport scooter, so the helmet compartiment needs to stay in tact. So I will be looking for a carburettor that will fit. But that can be done later. The 278ccm kit will be placed, as well as the malossi cam, cdi, valves and valve springs. Do you know if the ports on the VXR200 are the same size as the Vespa GTS 250 and 300? The heads seem the same to me. What kind of exhaust would you advice me? I found a scorpion, and two leovince exhausts (SBK/ 4Road) for the Runner, but I'd like to know if these are big enough for the 278ccm kit.

Thanks for your reply.

hi veLo .. next week ı will attend to a drag race that all bikes around cyprus will attend..ı strongly want to win this race and ı want to ask you if ı put the 125cc gears or malossi (16/42) gears and which rollers ..?

Hi Velo.
...Chosen a Runner:

What would you use as a street front fork? Malossi says the F32S is a good fork for street use, but I have read no reviews of it.
The F32s isn't anything special acctually and it is quite weak (I have destroied 3 by bending them in accidents in races) But for street use You still have the ability to adjust the load and damping. My advise is to use stock fork and just re-oil it if you aren't satisfied with it.

The "stock" Bitubos are realy fine but I wanted the ability to adjust mine.
The were priced at 890€.
I have seen track Runners using single shocks But I wouldn't advise it on the street because of the general strength and safety. Go for a Bitbubo or Paili shock. Or other type of "high quality" product.

I am planning on buying an Öhlins rear shock for mine, so if you are interestet. It is possible for you to purchase my used bitubos Just PM me.

It is corret that the carb won't fit.
I am not familiar with the different heads unfortunately. But I could imagine that it was a way for piaggio to save money to use the same head on different engines.
Conserning carb. Save your money. "Drill" the vacuum (ad a spare 1.5 or 2 mm hole next to the existing vacuum hole. This will make it open the throttle faster. Use the money you save on a vario and torquedrive system. That money is better spent.
Chose the 4Road exhaust (my favorite street pipe) and go for stock camshaft. This will give you loads of torque. Wich is good in street use bikes.

DM 210.
There isn't any golden rule conserning rollers and such.
Only trail and error will tell you what is fastest.

Could any body tell me what are the diferences between 125 and a 200 runner. Is it just the gears and rollers or is it something else?
