Gilera VXR runner 200 won't run after coolant problem

Hi
My VXR runner (the 2006 4 stroke version) popped a water pipe off the water pump. By the time I could stop (I was on the motorway) it had lost most of it's water. It's been refilled and pipe reconnected.
The scoot has a spark and turns over but won't catch and run...

Any ideas what might be the matter?

Is there compression on the cylinder or does it rew easiely on the starter.
You can risk burned piston rings, og a blown head gasket. And if there is water in the camber. It can be very hard to start up.

It's with my mechanic, think he said he can't check compression until it fires up and he can't get it to do that.
piston rings and head gasket sound expensive to fix...
how easy is it to check chamber for water and drain?
