Upgrading vs. Derestricting Kymco People 50

Hi!
I'm so glad to have found this forum! Two weeks ago I bought my first scooter, a cream and tan Kymco People 50. I absolutely love it! I'd love it a little more, though, it it went just a teeny bit faster.
I'm currently looking at options for upgrading it. One local scooter shop offers an 80cc upgrade kit to add 15mph to it, which would be about $300. The dealer where I bought it offers derestricting it which they say would add about 5, maybe 10mph to it for about $100.
Does anyone have any experience with either of these options? Or something else entirely? What are the pros and cons of upgrading vs just leaving it as is? I love my scooter and don't want to do anything that might damage it.
Thanks in advance for all of your help!

First rmove the restrictor plug from exhaust pipe and bore or ream it from 10mm to 15mm. No more because a certain amount of back pressure is required for economical function of the engine.

then replace it in your machine and see the difference. You will be quite pleased I am sure and save lots of money

I used this procedure on my Yamaha Jog and it works.

PS Happy scootering

Hi Kimberli,

I only derestricted our people 50 and it went from 30mph to 48mph on flat or downhill a little. That's pretty good for just derestriction. The mods out there for the people 50 are slim, but do exist. Check Spi-Parts.com or Provoscooter.com, they list a few. Also try The Scootershop in Orange, California. The mods I've seen are a Malossi 70cc AC Big Bore Kit, Leo Vince makes a ZX pipe for it, Malossi Multivar variator, Carbs are available too. Good Luck, derestrict it first though and then you can mod it later. The derestrict will give you a bit of zip, right away. :)
