Steering bearings?

I think my steering bearings have gone as my bike wiggles all over the road!
How do i know if the bottom or top bearings have gone?
And how do i replace them? Do i need a special tool?

i found that my forks have loads of play bacward and fowards as well..
From what i have heard it is not to hard a job.. but has any one removed their forks before or removed their bearings...

I could probably have a guess but i want to know if you have any tips.............
