Piaggio 50 crankshaft/half pulley damage?

New member here from the US, need a little help.

Just bought a used low km 2003 Derbi GP1 with the Piaggio LC motor. Ran fine for a couple weeks then began making strange noises and failed to start with electric starter. Pulled the case cover and found that the crankshaft nut was loose and the splines on the crankshaft and vario outer half pulley were completely gone.

Questions: Is this common? What is the cause? I suspect that when the bike was derestricted by removing the vario washer, the nut was not properly torqued and/or locktite was not used. Was thinking poor design/manufacture and also using electric start may have contributed to the problem -- I see that the aftermarket half pulleys delete the starter gear teeth.

A new crank and parts are on order. Went with the Malossi crank because of better steel, but will be using a factory pully half.

Looking for any experience, advice, suggestions, so this won't happen again. Thanks.
